What I said about the Segway Xyber Air
A moto-style e-bike that pulled me up steep gravel climbs on the throttle, with strong brakes and more fun than I expected. Not the pick for pavement-only riders.
I rode the Segway Xyber Air mostly on gravel, up two steep, bumpy climbs and back down, at about 200 lbs. On full throttle in Class 2 it held 12 to 14 mph on the steepest parts, and the hydraulic brakes with electronic braking gave me real control on loose rock going down. The 20 x 4 tires, front fork and plush but firm seat made gravel comfortable, and it was more fun to ride than I expected. It's a throttle-first, single-speed bike with a fixed seat, so it's not great for pedaling, and if you'll mostly ride on pavement there are better choices. I haven't done a range test or a long-term test yet.
My video review
Liked
- Plenty of pull on steep gravel climbs on full throttle with me at about 200 lbs
- Strong, controllable hydraulic brakes plus smooth electronic braking
- Comfortable on gravel thanks to 20 x 4 tires, the 80 mm fork and a plush but firm seat
- Class 1, 2, 3 or Hybrid, selectable on the display
- Briefcase-style removable battery with lockable storage underneath
- AirLock auto-lock and Apple Find My
Didn't
- The fixed seat makes pedaling uncomfortable
- Single speed, so the motor does the work
- Not the best value if you'll only ride on pavement
- You need the app to start the bike
- Optional rear rack is rated for only 22 lbs
- Some smart features need a subscription after the first year (price not published)
What I said about the Ailife X20B
A punchy moped-style throttle commuter with signals and dual suspension; cramped to pedal for tall riders.
Buy the Ailife X20B if you want a moped-style bike that you'll mostly ride on throttle. It has huge punch on hills, and I said it's best used as a throttle commuter. It comes with turn signals, a horn, a high/low headlight, fenders and dual suspension (0:29 to 0:34, 1:13 to 1:22, 3:56 to 4:12). I rode it for several weeks. Skip it if you pedal a lot and you're tall. At 6'1" and 200 lb, the seat sat too close to the pedals for me (0:43 to 0:51, 4:12 to 4:26). Also skip it if finish quality matters. The welds and front cables were messy.
