What I said about the MACFOX X7
If you're a parent shopping for a teenager who is too young to drive, the MACFOX X7 is a great fit.
If you're a parent shopping for a teenager who is too young to drive, the MACFOX X7 is a great fit. The styling is phenomenal, with huge fat tires, a big headlight and a long motorcycle-style seat. It's single speed and low maintenance, it has hydraulic disc brakes, and it has enough power to get a 150 to 185 lb kid up a hill on the throttle alone. As an adult at about 200 lb and 6'1", I wanted more power, and the fixed seat made pedaling uncomfortable for me. For a teen riding a mile or a couple of miles to school or practice, though, I think that's the right tradeoff. You don't have to worry about your kid on a super powerful e-bike.

Liked
- Phenomenal styling, with a motorcycle and dirt bike look
- Huge, comfortable 20 inch fat tires with MACFOX lettering
- Extra long seat with foot pegs for a passenger
- MACFOX hydraulic disc brakes that feel really great
- Meaty, almost dirt bike style grips
- Single speed, so there's nothing to shift and little to maintain
- Metal pedals instead of plastic
- Adjustable kickstand
- USB port to charge a phone
- Holder for a water bottle or small bag
- Enough throttle power for a 150 to 185 lb rider on a hill
Didn't
- Less power on inclines than I wanted at about 200 lb
- Headlight has its own power switch, separate from the display
- Battery mounted awkwardly on the outside of the frame
- A lot of exposed wires
- Pedaling is uncomfortable for a 6'1" rider because of the fixed seat
- Rigid rear end with no rear suspension
- Basic black and white display
What I said about the Aventon Aventure 3
Comfortable on gravel, lots of power, and the app lock is actually useful.
This is the best e-bike Aventon makes for me, and probably the best e-bike I've ridden, period. I'm 6'1" and about 200 lb and it fits me really well. I ride a lot of gravel now, and the fat tires plus the suspension seatpost make it feel almost like a full-suspension bike without the extra parts and cost. The 750W motor has plenty of power for any incline.

Liked
- Very comfortable on gravel and rough trails
- Suspension seatpost feels close to full suspension
- 750W motor with plenty of power on hills
- Beefy chain slap guard that held up to aggressive riding
- App-controlled rear wheel lock; I used it for a quick Trader Joe's run
- Fenders and rear rack included
Didn't
- Turn signals feel a bit gimmicky, and I couldn't find a hazard mode
- I'd like larger palm-rest grips (an easy swap)
- Front fender let some mud onto the underside of the battery
- Heavy at about 75 lb
Who should skip each one
- MACFOX X7: skip it if this is a dealbreaker: Less power on inclines than I wanted at about 200 lb
- Aventon Aventure 3: skip it if this is a dealbreaker: Turn signals feel a bit gimmicky, and I couldn't find a hazard mode
