How I picked

Every bike on this page is one I rode and filmed myself (2 bikes, videos from 2022 to 2023). Bikes I haven't ridden are left out. The top pick for each use is the bike with the highest AEB Score in that group that you can still buy. The score comes from the specs (range, motor, brakes and build, practicality) plus the current maker price, so it's the same yardstick for every bike. Specs come from the maker's listing, checked against what I saw on the ride. Prices are from my review data; tap through for the current price. More detail on how I test.

Who should skip each one

Straight from the downsides I hit in each review. If one of these is a dealbreaker for you, look at the next bike.

This page compares two very different family haulers I tested: a longtail and a sidecar. For every bike I’ve carried a passenger on, see best e-bikes with a passenger seat. Both carried my kids; they just do it in very different ways.

Aventon Abound: the easy everyday longtail

The 750W motor felt smooth and steady even when I was hauling, and the 440 lb capacity covers kids, groceries and gear. It’s a step-through, so it’s easy to share between riders, and the turn signals shut off on their own after about 10 blinks.

What bugged me: there’s no chain slap guard, and my frame got scratched during testing. The headlight also sits under the front basket, which I found less visible.

MOD Easy SideCar: the one the kids fight over

My kids (and my dog) loved riding in the sidecar, and the motor pulled it up hills with kids in it. The grips and seat are some of the most comfortable I’ve used.

What bugged me: right turns feel tippy with an empty sidecar, so slow down and shift your weight. The headlight mount also rattled no matter how tight I made it. I reviewed the older model; MOD now sells the SideCar 3.

Which one?

If you want something you can ride every day and share around the house, the Abound is the practical pick. If the whole point is a fun ride with kids or a pet right next to you, and you can live with the price, the SideCar is the one my family remembers.
